A civil liberties and human rights solicitor is a legal professional who specialises in cases related to the protection of people’s individual rights and freedoms.

They work to ensure that individuals are not subject to unfair treatment or discrimination by public authorities, including the police and government agencies. These assist in a broad range of areas, including discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of expression, asylum and immigration, unlawful detention, mistreatment and privacy issues.

Civil liberties and human rights solicitors may also work on public interest cases, challenging laws or policies that infringe on human rights and civil liberties. Some work with non-profit organisations, advocacy groups, or other stakeholders to bring about systemic change and protect the rights of marginalised communities.

They may also assist in legal action against private organisations or individuals who have violated a person's civil liberties or human rights.
